Last week I did a work placement to collect data for my mini dissertation/research project assignment for my college course. As a Travel and Tourism student, I was expected to do my placement in an organisation within the Travel and Tourism sector, for example a Travel Agency. I thought that instead of going to a travel agency and not doing much except observation; i thought i would go somewhere, where I can get some hands on experience...so I went to AbbeyCroft Veterinary Centre. In this post, I will be writing about my experience working at a Vets...
To summarise my week of work experience, I did a lot of cleaning, and used a contraption called the Rotowash, which is done once a week in reception, the two consult rooms and the prep room, The first thing I actually did was clean the shelves that were going up in the stock room. I was also lucky enough to watch the consults that the three Vet's Jamie, Julia and Claire did, though i was mostly hands on with Claire's consultations as there were several puppies that wanted attention. My favourite consult had to be on friday, with a Cocker Spaniel named Barney, and he kept sitting on my lap and putting his paws on my arm and shoulders...one of the cutest things ever.
On Tuesday, after a Spay operation on a Cat, I actually got to clean and put together the kit which they used in the operation together. The Kit, which Katie, the Head Nurse told me, has many different tools that do different things, most of them were forceps (scissor like tools), a Scalpel, a draper (which is the towel that they use to cover the area in which they are operating on, so no blood gets on the animals fur), the needles, a temperature thing, which shows when the kit is at the right temperature for it to be stored, and the swabs. Katie told me that it is crucial to have the right amount of swabs, as for example, if you put four swabs in a kit but come to put the kit together and thee is only three swabs, then the fourth swab is most likely still in the animal's stomach, which could lead to an infection and a seriously ill animal.
I was also lucky enough to watch a few operations. Now, i am not the best when it comes to blood as I am quite squeamish., You're probably thinking, 'Katie, why the hell did you go to a Vets, knowing operations take place and you are squeamish? You must me crazy!'. To answer that question, I probably am a little bit crazy for going there but, my love for animals, trumps the fact that I am quite squeamish. Anyway, the operations were quite cool to watch, I only saw a few, a couple of castrations on male dogs, a Spay on a cat, and a lump removal on a dog.
One of my favourite memories will be looking after Stacey's chihuahua, Cindy whilst Stacey was busy with an operation. On the Friday, Stacey brought a Cake in for us, as it was my last day. The cake was a super yummy, cupcake with raspberry jam, and strawberry frosting.
That's it for this post, I will be back again later this week with another post. I will leave my social media liks below. Write soon.
